Quick History Lesson – How Black Friday & Cyber Monday Got There Names
History of Black Friday:
“Black Friday” is the informal name given to the busiest shopping day of the year–the day after Thanksgiving. Originally called “Black Friday” because of the large volume of shoppers the day after Thanksgiving.
Crowds of shoppers clogged busy streets causing traffic jams and accidents while frustrated consumers stood in long lines for hours before stores opened often committing violent attacks on others.
Beginning in the 1950’s, nationwide, employees began calling in sick the day after Thanksgiving to give themselves a four-day weekend and a viable chance to capitalize on bargains and deeply discounted prices. Now Black Friday marks the day that kicks off the “Holiday Season” and has become a critical contributor to the economy, and especially retailers.
History of Cyber Monday:
On November 28 of 2005, Cyber Monday joined the lexicon thanks to a press release in Shop.org. They announced a marketing revolution with a title “Cyber Monday Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year.” It was developed as a way for Internet-based companies to have a way to compete with Black Friday, typically held by brick and mortar retail stores the Friday after Thanksgiving.
By 2014, Cyber Monday online sales continued to trend upward with an astounding increase in revenue from previous 2013 sales. This made it the biggest, online shopping day in history. In 2014 Americans spent an average of $124 per order on Cyber Monday online orders.
Social media and mobile device apps added to the convenience of Cyber Monday. No longer do you have wait in endless lines, deal with confrontations or traffic. Today, you can open your apps and make online purchases while taking full advantage deeply discounted pricing on merchandise. What’s Popular? How Long will Sales Last?
What’s Popular & How Long will the Holiday Sales Last?
Some of the most popular online purchases are tech items, home security and automation systems, especially DIY home security, wearable technology as well as the traditional small appliances, clothing, gift cards and digital media.
In stores, most Black Friday sales end after November 29. However, sales will continue online through Cyber Monday and beyond. In past years, we’ve seen sales last the entire week afterward. This year, that means Black Friday and Cyber Week sales should end around December 6.
If You don’t get it Here & Now, When Will You?
If you don’t get your Home Security System here and now, chances are you won’t ever get one. Why? Because you already know that a burglary occurs in the United States every 15 seconds. That means that 26 out of every 1,000 homes on average are burglarized.
1,000,000 home invasions occur each year in the US. The one-year chances of a robbery inside your home are about 1 in 6000. Meaning you are two-times more likely of being struck by lightning in your lifetime.

5 Easy Ways to Get the Most of Black Friday – Cyber Monday
With so many deeply cut prices it can be overwhelming to stay on track and find exactly what you’re looking for.
The best approach is going to be putting a little thought behind your shopping time frames. Afterall, these are the moments you’ve been waiting for all year–right?
I know, the last thing you want to hear is, let’s make a plan. But Seriously, Let’s make a quick plan 😁. It will make your shopping experience much more smooth I promise.
1. Do A little research
Did you know that many retail chains actually mark up their prices before the holidays, just so they can “reduce” the prices during the holiday season? Look for what prices are off sale and compare. Are you really saving any money? In some instances no. Don’t be the one all your friends talk about after the sale by missing out. No matter how tempting the sale is or how much you want it, don’t fall for the “75% off!” tags without comparing first.
2. Celebrate Black Friday – All Week
An estimated 165.8 million people 165.8 million people shopped between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday in 2018 — with each person spending an average of $313 during this period. If the thought of standing in long lines for hours on end with huge crowds is not your idea of fun you, you’ll be happy to know that online retailers like Amazon and Tink actually offer fantastic discounts all Thanksgiving week.
3. Price comparison Apps
You can use the Google Shopping app to compare prices and many other “Online Apps” to research best deals and prices. This will save you a lot of time in the contested streets, looking and paying for parking.
4. Map out your day
Make a list of must-have items and prioritize them:
- Store hours
- Product availability
- Potential shortages
- Probability of flash sales and limited discounts
Use this list to map out your route so you know which stores to visit first and which products will likely sell out quickly.
5. Call or email ahead of time
Save time and energy by calling ahead, or emailing the retailer to make make sure there is plenty of what you want in stock, it in your size, color and brand.
Doing all this before leaving the house will make the difference between a smooth shopping experience with time for lunch, or a cold Winters fishing expedition missing dinner.
By the way, some stores will hold items for you at the layaway department–so call in advance.
Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday in 2018 became the highest U.S. eCommerce sales day in history. With $7.9 billion in revenue, the most popular products were: televisions, computers, electronics, DIY home security systems and toys.
